Track day coaching

Track day coaching from a pro, without a coach in the car.

Most track days and HPDE events won't let a coach ride with you, and the instructor you do get is a volunteer with a different car. Send one lap of onboard video instead and get it reviewed by a professional driver coach with 25 years in motorsport.

01 · What you get

Narrated, measured, written down. Back in 24 hours.

Video only: your lap, narrated

A coaching review recorded over your onboard with a brief breakdown at each corner: where you brake, where you turn in, what your hands and feet are doing, and what to change. No data logger needed.

Video with data: the full data review

Send a data file too and your traces are overlaid against a reference lap and explained corner by corner: speed, throttle, brake and steering. The more data the better, but it is not essential.

Your three biggest losses

Not twenty notes. The three things costing you the most time at your track in your car, ranked.

A drill for the next session

One specific exercise so the next track day is practice, not repetition.

Any car, any track

Miata to GT3, HPDE 1 to advanced run group, Laguna Seca to your local club circuit. Phone footage is fine.

02 · Why it works

The instruction you can't get at the track.

A track day coach in the right seat sees your lap once, at speed, while trying not to hit anything. A review of your onboard video sees it as many times as it takes, with the trace alongside, and the notes are written down so you can re-read them in the paddock.

Who it's for

HPDE and lapping-day drivers at every level, from a first novice group to drivers chasing a time in advanced. Most of the time saved in a track day review comes from vision and brake release, not from bravery, so the gains tend to be biggest for drivers who have done five to twenty days and have plateaued.

Who's coaching

Alex Waters spent sixteen years as a McLaren driver coach, ran the driver program at The Concours Club in Miami and the member driving experience at Singer Drivers Club, and has coached for Ferrari, Porsche, Aston Martin, Bentley and others. He still races. Read a real review to see what comes back.

Track day coaching versus a day with an instructor

In-person coaching is excellent and expensive: a day of professional one-to-one coaching at a track costs more than a season of reviews. A review is the coaching for every weekend in between, and the way to arrive at the next in-person day with the basics sorted.

03 · Questions

Do I need data for track day coaching?

No. One clean lap of forward-facing video from a phone, GoPro or dash cam gets you a narrated coaching review over the lap. If you have VBOX, MoTeC or sim telemetry, include it and you get the full data review against a reference lap instead. More data is better, but it is not essential: without a logger we work from what the video shows to find your lap time.

What if my track day group doesn't allow cameras?

Most do, with the camera mounted securely. If yours doesn't, a lap from a previous event or a sim lap of the same circuit still works.

I'm a beginner. Is this too advanced?

No. The review is pitched at the level you're at, and the fastest improvement usually comes in the first few sessions.

How fast do I get it back?

Within 24 hours of your upload window closing, or 12 hours with the $100 fast-track add-on offered after you upload (fast track isn't available for uploads made between 10pm and 1am Mountain time).

Can you coach a specific track?

Yes. The review is about your technique, and the notes reference the actual corners at your circuit. Alex has worked at over forty circuits across the US, UK, Europe and Australia.
